Laparoscopy
Laparoscopy (Advanced Keyhole Surgery)
Laparoscopy is a modern, safe, and minimally invasive surgical technique used in gynecology to diagnose and treat various conditions of the uterus, ovaries, and fallopian tubes. It is also called keyhole surgery because it is performed through very small cuts instead of a large incision.
In this procedure, a thin telescope-like instrument called a laparoscope (with a camera and light) is inserted through a small incision in the abdomen. This allows the surgeon to see the internal organs clearly on a screen and perform surgery with high precision using specialized instruments.
When is Laparoscopy Needed?
Laparoscopy is commonly advised for the following conditions:
- Ovarian cysts
- Endometriosis
- Uterine fibroids
- Infertility evaluation and treatment
- Ectopic pregnancy
- Chronic pelvic pain
- Adhesions (internal scar tissue)
- Abnormal bleeding
- Diagnostic purposes when cause is unclear
Types of Laparoscopic Procedures
- Laparoscopic ovarian cyst removal (cystectomy)
- Laparoscopic hysterectomy (uterus removal)
- Laparoscopic myomectomy (fibroid removal)
- Laparoscopic treatment of endometriosis
- Laparoscopic tubal surgery
- Diagnostic laparoscopy
Procedure Overview
- Performed under general anesthesia
- Small cuts (usually 0.5–1 cm) are made on the abdomen
- A camera and instruments are inserted through these cuts
- The abdomen is gently filled with gas to create space for surgery
- The procedure is performed while viewing the organs on a monitor
- Cuts are closed with minimal stitches
Benefits of Laparoscopy
- Minimal cuts and almost no visible scars
- Less pain after surgery
- Faster recovery compared to open surgery
- Short hospital stay (often 1–2 days)
- Early return to daily activities
- Less blood loss during surgery
- Lower risk of infection and complications
Recovery After Laparoscopy
- Most patients can walk within a few hours
- Mild pain or discomfort may be present for a few days
- Normal routine can usually be resumed within a few days to a week
- Complete recovery depends on the type of surgery performed
Why Choose Laparoscopy?
Laparoscopy offers a safer, faster, and more comfortable surgical experience. It is widely preferred due to its precision, quicker healing, and better cosmetic results.
