Types of Pregnancy

Pregnancy can be classified in different ways based on location, risk, number of babies, and clinical condition.


1. Based on Location

a. Intrauterine Pregnancy (Normal Pregnancy)

  • Baby develops inside the uterus
  • Most common and healthy type

b. Ectopic Pregnancy

  • Pregnancy occurs outside the uterus (commonly in fallopian tube)
  • Medical emergency

2. Based on Risk

a. Low-Risk Pregnancy

  • No major medical or obstetric complications
  • Routine monitoring required

b. High-Risk Pregnancy

  • Increased risk to mother or baby

Examples:

  • Diabetes, hypertension
  • Thyroid disorders
  • Previous C-section
  • Multiple pregnancy

3. Based on Number of Fetuses

a. Singleton Pregnancy

  • One baby

b. Multiple Pregnancy

  • Twins, triplets, etc.

4. Based on Conception Method

a. Natural Pregnancy

  • Occurs without medical assistance

b. Assisted Pregnancy

  • Through fertility treatments like:
    • IUI
    • IVF

5. Based on Viability / Outcome

a. Viable Pregnancy

  • Baby has reached stage where survival is possible

b. Non-Viable Pregnancy

  • Pregnancy cannot continue (e.g., missed abortion, blighted ovum)

6. Based on Timing / Duration

a. Term Pregnancy

  • 37–40 weeks

b. Preterm Pregnancy

  • Less than 37 weeks

c. Post-term Pregnancy

  • More than 40–42 weeks

7. Special Types of Pregnancy

  • Molar Pregnancy (abnormal growth of placental tissue)
  • Chemical Pregnancy (very early miscarriage)
  • Frozen / Missed Pregnancy
  • Surrogate Pregnancy
  • Teenage Pregnancy
  • Elderly Pregnancy (Advanced Maternal Age)
